Recycling, but Not at Any Cost
Finland recycles 96% of aluminium cans and 93% of paper, not through stricter rules, but by designing recycling into everyday life.
Finland's recycling success rests on system design rather than enforcement, achieving near-100% refillable glass bottle returns and sending only 10% of municipal waste to landfill, through more than 1,850 eco-points and 5,000 reverse vending machines built into daily routines. Australia's kerbside-first model struggles in low-density and regional areas where the same approach is not always effective. The opportunity for Australian councils is not to standardise further but to add supermarket-based and drop-off alternatives where kerbside collection underperforms.
