The Hidden Cost of Casual Academic Workforce
At least 28 Australian universities have been found liable for underpaying casual staff, with sector exposure now estimated above $300 million.
Between 50% and 80% of undergraduate teaching is delivered by casual staff, and at one university 68% are on contracts under three years, yet most institutions cannot say what that workforce actually costs once unpaid work, churn and legal exposure are counted. An NTEU-commissioned review found $159 million in underpayments affecting more than 97,000 staff across 30 institutions, with total sector liability estimated at up to $300 million. NMC's costing model brings four hidden cost layers into a single auditable framework, replacing assumption with a number universities and finance teams can actually act on.
